A tool vibration can result in increased tool wear, poorer surface finish and reduced tool life time during the precision end-milling process. In order to improve the surface quality of workpiece and tool life, Singular Spectrum Analysis is applied to extract and transform the raw signals of the vibrations on the cutting tool for investigating the relationship between tool vibration and surface roughness. The response surface methodology D-optimal design was employed to carry out experimental study. In this experimental investigation, the spindle speed, feed rate and cutting depth were chosen as the numerical factor. And the cutting feed direction and holder type were regarded as the categorical factor. The vibration frequency and amplitude of cutting tool in various cutting conditions were measured by the power spectrum density. Results show that the increase of feed rate and cutting depth will be no stability and poor surface roughness during the cutting process. The vibration amplitude along the cutting feed direction is generally larger than that along other direction. The spindle speed and tool type affects the cutting stability during the cutting process. The results in ANOVA confirm that the surface roughness and vibration amplitude obtained in this study are fairly well fitted with the experimental values up to 95% confidence interval. The results mentioned above can predict and avoid unstable cutting and poor surface quality due to tool vibration in precision end-milling process. Also, utilizing the milling parameters obtained further to improve the processing quality.
